FAQ

How do I find someone to practise with?

Open Discover Partners. It shows people who speak the language you are learning and are learning the language you speak. Filter by language, or switch on Online to see who is available right now. Tap someone to open their profile and send them a friend request.

There is no random matching in the iPhone app. Why?

Pairing with random strangers is not available on iPhone or iPad. There you connect through the Community tab and friend requests instead, so you always choose who you talk to. Everything else — chat, video calls, corrections, scheduled sessions — works the same on both platforms. On Android, Quick Practice additionally puts you straight into a session with an available partner.

Nobody shows up in Discover. What can I do?

Discover only lists people whose language pair fits yours, so a narrow profile means a short list. Add more languages you are willing to teach or learn, switch off the Online filter to include people who are not active at this moment, or try another time of day — your best partners are often in a different timezone.

How do I add someone as a friend?

Open their profile and tap Add Friend. Once they accept, you can message each other and start video calls. Requests you have received or sent are under Friends → Requests, and you can cancel or decline them there at any time.

Why can't I start a video call?

Video calls only work between friends. Send a friend request first — once it is accepted, Video Call becomes available on their profile and in your chat.

How do translations and corrections work in chat?

Long-press any message. Translate shows it in your language. Correct lets you rewrite your partner's sentence the way a native speaker would put it, and they see your version with the changes highlighted. Save stores the phrase together with its translation and correction under Settings → Learning → Saved phrases.

Can I send photos or videos in chat?

Yes. In a chat with a friend, tap the attachment button to send an image or a video. Media is covered by the same rules as text — you can report it, and moderators can remove it.

What are scheduled sessions?

You can book a practice session with a friend for a specific day and time, and repeat it every week if you want. Both of you get a reminder shortly before it starts. Open a friend's profile and choose Scheduled Session to set one up.

What are live subtitles?

During a video session, live subtitles transcribe what is said and can translate it in real time. The feature is currently limited to accounts we have enabled it for — if you see "This feature is not enabled for your account yet", email us and we will look at it. While subtitles are switched on, audio is sent to Google Cloud Speech-to-Text for transcription; it is processed live and no recording is kept.

Do you record my sessions?

No. LingoSwap does not record or store the audio or video of your live sessions. Media passes through our LiveKit server only to connect the two of you and is never written to disk. The one case where audio leaves that path is live subtitles: while they are on, it is transcribed in real time by Google Cloud Speech-to-Text, and still not stored. Keep in mind that we cannot prevent the other person from recording their own screen — treat every session as if it could be recorded.

How do I block or report someone?

During a session, use the ⛔ Block and ⚠ Disturbing buttons on the session screen. The same options are on every user profile. To report one specific chat message, long-press it and choose Report message. Someone you block can no longer message you, call you or see you in Discover; you can review and undo blocks under Settings → Safety & Legal → Blocked users. Reports are reviewed and serious cases result in an immediate ban.

A message says it was removed by a moderator. What happened?

When content breaks our community guidelines it is removed on our servers — the text and any attached photo or video are deleted and only a placeholder stays in the conversation. Repeated violations lead to a temporary or permanent ban.

How do I change my languages, level or profile photo?

Everything is on your Profile screen. Your native and learning languages decide who you see in Discover and who sees you, so keep them up to date — adding a language you can teach is the fastest way to get more partners.

Notifications aren't working.

First check Settings → Notifications → Push notifications inside the app, then your device settings (iOS: Settings → LingoSwap → Notifications; Android: App info → Notifications). Permissions often fall out of sync after a reinstall — switching the in-app toggle off and on again re-registers your device.

I forgot my password.

If you signed up with Apple or Google, there is no separate password — just tap the same button on the login screen. If you registered with an email address, we do not have a self-service reset yet, so email us from the address on the account and we will restore your access.

Is LingoSwap free?

Yes. LingoSwap is free at the moment, including the community, chat and video sessions. We may add optional premium features later, but the core of the app will stay free.

How is the leaderboard calculated?

Your rank comes from the total number of minutes you have spent in live practice sessions, so it rewards actually talking rather than opening the app. The in-app mini-game has its own separate leaderboard.

How old do I have to be?

You must be at least 13 years old to use LingoSwap. If you are under 18, you need permission from a parent or legal guardian.

How do I delete my account?

In the app: Settings → Account → Delete account. This permanently deletes your profile, your messages and your session history and cannot be undone. You can also request deletion without opening the app at swaplingo.studybody.io/account-delete. If you signed up with Apple, you can additionally revoke access from your Apple ID settings.
